We understand that Sir William Plender, G.B.E., the Controller of cur Bank, appointed by the British Government, has been in communication with the Authorities here regarding the Liquidation of German Banking Firms in the East, and the payment of their indebtedness to the German and Austrian Banks under his control in London. Further, we have been informed that where sufficient assets are available the principle has been recognised that sums due should be remitted to London in order that the German and Austrian Banks in London can satisfy their British creditors.

Accordingly, we enclose herewith a summary, which has been duly verified by our Official Supervisor, showing the amounts due to and from the various Branches of the Deutsch Asiatische Bank. As you will observe the net amount, after taking all these accounts into consideration, shows an indebtedness of the Deutsch Asiatische Bank to our Bank of

£21,719-155.-12.

We have made repeated efforts to liquidate the indebtedness of the Deutsch Asiatische Bank to us by obtaining remittances from its Branches in China, but As it would appear, however, from communications with only partial success. that have passed between our Controller and the Authorities here that you have surplus assets available in Calcutta under your control, we beg to apply to you for the release of a sum £21,719-158.-1d. to cover the net debit balance, and in accordance with the wishes of the Authorities we ask you to arrange for the remittance of this sum by £ sterling cheque or preferably by Telegraphic Transfer on London.

The balance of £21,719-15-1 has been arrived at with Taels and Marks taken at approximate rates of Exchange as shown.

In addition to the above sum there is a further sum in the hands of the Deutsch Asiatische Bank, Shanghai, for monies deposited by Arnhold Karberg and Company and placed to an account "Arnhold Karberg and Company and Direction der Disconto-Gescellschaft separate account 146,000 Taels approxi- mately. These sums were intended as cover for acceptances, paid by this Bank for account of Arnhold Karberg and Company (a) under the credit guaranteed by the Deutsch Asiatische Bank and (b) on General account The above deposit can- not be allocated against specific acceptances, but if the account can be released we should be entitled to have a proportionate sum at current rate of Exchange for Taels on London paid to us, and in any event to receive any surplus after repayment to the Deutsch Asiatische Bank of any sums paid under that Bank's guarantee to this Bank. There is therefore due to us a sum, at present not exactly ascertainable, in addition to the £21,719-155.-1d. above referred to.

If you can ascertain, by correspondence, from the Liquidator of the Deutsch Asitatische Bank in Shanghai more exactly how this matter stands and ought in his view to be adjusted we shall be much obliged and we shall be glad to hear from you.

We also beg to enclose herewith a statement of the Calcutta Branch's current account in our books showing a debit balance as at 31st December 1917 of £ 703-195,-od.
